January 2023 In Review

2023 is off to a tremendous start, with the Subsocial team winning a parachain slot on Polkadot, sponsoring the Polkadot Europe Hackathon, and adding cross-chain transfer functionality to Sub.ID. Let’s take a closer look in this monthly recap.

2022 In Review

We started the year off by recapping all of our major announcements from 2022. Notable mentions include the launch of our Kusama parachain, release of our Energy system, and the creation of Polkadot Arena, a community blog serving the Italian community. Give it a read to see how far we’ve come since winning a Kusama crowdloan in late 2021.

Subsocial Is Moving To Polkadot

After successfully wining Polkadot’s 37th auction on January 15th, we were thrilled to announce our plans to move Subsocial from Kusama to Polkadot. All data, balances, accounts, etc. will be migrated automatically; users will not need to take any action. This move will allow Subsocial greater opportunities for technical and business integrations within the Polkadot ecosystem, as well as increased security from Polkadot’s validators.

The actual migration will take place within the next few months; we will continue to update you further as the migration happens.

The Polkadot Community Call

Every month, Parity hosts a Polkadot Community Call on Twitter, where projects in the ecosystem can talk about their recent announcements, achievements, and news. January’s call was held on the 20th, where we spoke about recent news, and some exciting plans for this year.

An Overview Of The Subsocial Ecosystem

As the Subsocial ecosystem continues to grow, we want to highlight some of the applications available for use. Our team member Kimin created a video showcasing four of the most powerful dapps built on Subsocial, including PolkaVerse and a soon-to-be-released dapp called Post4Ever, which lets you easily save tweets on Subsocial.

Polkadot Europe Hackathon

The Subsocial team is sponsoring the Polkadot Europe Hackathon with four challenges, including a challenge co-sponsored by the Subsquid team, and a challenge with an extra bonus from the Zeitgeist team if your solution meets certain requirements.

Participating in hackathons is a fantastic way to get started building in Web3, and can even lead to a full time role with a team. We hired one of our front-end developers after he won $18,000 in the 2022 Polkadot North America Hackathon!

If you’re looking for some inspiration for what’s possible to build with Subsocial, or just want to see how it can be done, watch the recording of our hackathon workshop. Tushar, our DevEx specialist, shows how you can build a decentralized Instagram in just 50 minutes.

Are you interested in working on one of our challenges in this hackathon? Make sure to register for the hackathon, have a look at our documentation, and come have a chat with us in our developer channel.

Cross-Chain Transfers On Sub.ID

Sub.ID previously supported same-chain transfers for a number of assets, but recently its transfer functionality has been greatly expanded. Now, users can transfer assets between various chains in the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystem, using the new cross-chain transfer modal.

As the best location in the ecosystem to manage your portfolio, this functionality is a natural fit for Sub.ID, and it takes advantage of Sub.ID’s connections with 35+ chains in the ecosystem.

Sub.ID support for DOT and KSM staking will be released soon, and our Batch 2 proposal will follow. We will continue to keep you all updated on our progress, including how the migration to Polkadot is going. We have some cool developments and integrations planned for the next few months and can’t wait to share them with you all!
